8.75″ dia. Born Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria, he renounced the title to become the only emperor of the Second Mexican Empire (1863-67). This government ran parallel to the presidency of Benito Juarez (1858-72). Young Austrian archduke Maximilian was placed on the French-created throne of Mexico as emperor in 1864 and attempted sweeping reforms. These were rejected by the majority of Mexican people and by French supporters soon deserted him leading to his execution in 1867. Signed J. Viellard Potteries (Bordeaux, France) & D. Johnston.
